Chapter 17

Nan’s eyes fluttered open. Calm morning light was filtering through the curtains, replacing the flickering shadows from the night before. Shamus was stirring. His arm was draped over her, his warm body tucked against her backside. She smiled and stretched like a contented cat against his torso. He opened his eyes and found his face in her curls. He moved her hair away and laid his head on her pillow.

“Good morning,” he said with a smile.

She turned over to face him. “Where am I?”

“What? You’re in my house in my bed.”

“What? How did I get here? Shamus, I came to you cold and in trouble and you took advantage of me? How could you?”

“I—” She started laughing and covered her mouth with the duvet. “Katie, you’re a wicked woman.” As she turned over and snuggled herself under his arm, his face was once again buried in her hair. He didn’t know what time it was, but he was sure that it must be nearing time for her to head to the office. But he wasn’t ready to let her go. Not for a day, not for a minute. “Would you want to spend the day with me?”

She smiled as she played with his chest hair. “Yes, I would.”

“The boys won’t mind, right? They’re not going to beat me up for stealing their aunt away and getting her to blow off work?”

“No, it will be fine.” And even if it wasn’t, she didn’t care. For once, she was going to do something for herself. “What should we do first?” Right on cue, Zoey burst through the door and jumped onto the bed. She needed to go outside—now. “I’ll get the coffee going and let the princess here outside. You stay here and relax.”

While Shamus was taking care of Her Majesty, Nan called Connor. While the phone rang, she hoped that nobody would answer so she could simply leave a quick message. How was she supposed to explain to her nephew that she was much too busy languishing in a man’s bed to come into the office? After chewing on her lip for a second the solution came to her. She would fake a cough and say she was sick. What he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.

When Shamus returned to bed, he brought her a cup of coffee prepared just as she took it—sweet and light. She raised the cup to her lips but didn’t sip. Instead, she tipped her nose to the cup and inhaled its roasted fragrance. Then put the cup down on the bedside table. After decades of living in the past, it was time to confess and start living in the present.

“Don’t like your coffee, love?”

“No. I don’t. In fact, I hate coffee.”

“I didn’t make it right? I’m sorry. You tell me how you want it and I’ll make you a fresh cup.”

“No, you don’t understand. I hate the taste of coffee. Not just your coffee. All coffee.”

“But you always—”

“I know. I do always have coffee at work.
